Blue Like Me is a merchandise project inspired by the transcultural art of Siona Benjamin

Blue Like Me is the signature artistic endeavor by Benjamin and her team to transform her art in a functional manner through objects of daily life. Every object tells a story in relation to the design series like seasons, elements, etc.

The seasons' shawls collection represents the colors and hues of each season. The shawls are versatile and sure to complement an attire whether for work or formal or casual occasions. May even spark a new conversation or two!

Themes & Visual Symbolism in Benjamin's art merchandise

The Signature Blue Skin: Benjamin paints her main figures with vibrant blue skin to symbolize skin color as a neutral, universal marker of the sky and ocean, and the blue associated with Jewish tradition (such as the tekhelet thread). Her work bridges her Indian-Jewish and American identity as an "otherness" and transcultural belonging that transcends race, home, and geography.

Cultural Fusion: Her work blends Indian miniature painting techniques, Persian illuminated manuscripts, Byzantine icons, pop art, comic book dialogue bubbles, and Jewish illuminated texts.

Feminism and Mythology: Figures like Lilith, Vashti, Sarah, and Rachel appear alongside Hindu goddesses and contemporary women, reinterpreting ancient stories through a modern, multicultural lens.

Benjamin's art provokes viewers to see the world from the periphery; it is a glimpse into plurality while working to repair the world.
